The Meaning of “Barat”

The certificate of faith, the certificate of life, the certificate of worldly existence, the certificate of the grave, the certificate of the Day of Judgment, the certificate of the Hereafter, the certificate of peace, prosperity, liberation, and success in both worlds—above all, the certificate of attaining Allah and the intercession and closeness of our most beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ—are all encompassed within the profound meaning of Lailatul Barat.

Human life is composed of many dimensions. Success or failure, prosperity or deprivation, ultimate salvation or ruin—these outcomes are shaped by both permanent and temporary factors. Permanent and fundamental elements determine the final destiny of a person, while temporary factors create transient states of happiness, sorrow, or a mixture of both. Thus, destiny has a structure and a process.

The Foundations of True Destiny

Understanding the truth of life, connecting oneself to the source of truth, illuminating one’s existence with divine guidance, realizing the purpose and meaning of life, using time meaningfully, finding the correct direction and rightful companions, acquiring knowledge, wisdom, and moral excellence, and fulfilling one’s responsibilities—these are the essential and permanent foundations that determine a person’s ultimate destiny.

If these foundations are absent, life becomes engulfed in falsehood, darkness, and corruption. Alongside these, worldly provisions such as security, dignity, lawful rights, opportunities, and the ability to act are also indispensable for a healthy, stable, and flourishing life.

Without the first category, life loses its ultimate purpose; without the second, life becomes painful, insecure, and vulnerable to oppression and deviation.

The Source of Destiny and the Means of Divine Mercy

All destiny—whether mercy or trial—originates solely from Allah, the Most Merciful. However, divine decrees are never arbitrary or unjust. They are governed by fixed, just, and immutable principles and laws.

Every act of creation, mercy, blessing, and provision descends through a divinely appointed means (wasilah), known as the True Messenger (Rasul-e-Haqiqi)—our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. For this reason, the Qur’an describes him as “Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin”—a mercy for all worlds.

Through this divinely established medium, life comes into existence, develops, prospers, and is safeguarded from misfortune.

Divine Provisions and the Purpose of Prophethood

Allah has provided humanity with all physical means necessary for survival—light, air, water, land, food, energy, and natural resources—along with inner faculties such as sight, hearing, intellect, conscience, and the power to act.

Yet material provisions alone are insufficient. Therefore, Allah sent prophets so that humanity might understand the truth of life, distinguish right from wrong, and be freed from ignorance, oppression, superstition, and moral decay. The final and universal guidance was delivered by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who presented a complete and just way of life ensuring dignity, justice, and balance at individual, social, and state levels.

Social Systems, Power, and Human Destiny

Islam provides clear guidance for education, economics, social justice, and governance to ensure equal dignity, freedom, and rights for all people. When these systems are distorted or abandoned, falsehood and injustice dominate, civilizations collapse, and human rights are lost.

History bears witness that when tribalism, monarchy, authoritarianism, or group-based tyranny are imposed in the name of religion, people’s destinies are manipulated and destroyed. Tragically, some individuals—disguised as scholars—have supported such oppression, betraying Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, the Ahl al-Bayt, the Rightly Guided Caliphs, the true Imams, saints, and martyrs, in exchange for worldly gain. As a result, religion is distorted, and society falls into chaos.

Fortune, Misfortune, and Human Responsibility

Misfortune is not an independent reality; it is the deprivation of fortune and its enabling conditions. When individuals follow divine guidance with intellect, conscience, and moral responsibility, fortune manifests. When they adopt negligence, false ideologies, corrupt leadership, and unjust systems, misfortune naturally follows.

Thus, destiny is shaped at three interconnected levels: the individual, society, and the global order.

Effort, Means, and Reliance on Allah

Allah has granted human beings knowledge, freedom, strength, and choice, along with clear consequences for their actions. Those who deny divine power and rely solely on material mechanisms fall into atheistic error. Conversely, those who abandon effort and means while falsely claiming reliance on Allah fall into ignorance.

The correct path is to rely upon Allah while sincerely adopting the divinely prescribed means and striving according to His guidance. If effort follows a distorted path or corrupt leadership, it will inevitably lead to suffering and failure.

Lailatul Barat and the Renewal of Destiny

Lailatul Barat is not merely a sacred night; it is a divine opportunity to reassess, reform, and realign human destiny. True benefit from this blessed night lies in returning—individually and collectively—to the just, balanced, and mercy-based path ordained by Allah and demonstrated by His beloved Messenger ﷺ.

Only then can humanity attain peace in this world, safety in the grave, success on the Day of Judgment, and eternal salvation in the Hereafter—by the will and mercy of Allah.
