Bangladesh's female umpire Sathira Zakir Jessie will be umpiring on a prestigious stage like the World Cup. She has achieved this honor in the Women's Under-19 T20 World Cup starting in Malaysia on January 18.
Jessie, who umpired in the Under-19 Asia Cup in Malaysia last year, has been nominated as one of the 16 umpires announced by the ICC. A total of 16 umpires and 4 match referees have been nominated to officiate in this tournament.
Sathira Jessie has been appointed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as the first female umpire in Bangladesh. In addition to umpiring on the field, she is also a former cricketer. She has represented the country as a bowler.
Among the 16 teams participating in this World Cup, Bangladesh's opponents in Group 'D' are Australia, Nepal and Scotland. The final of the tournament will be held on February 2.
The World Cup will have a maximum of two umpires each from the Netherlands, India and the West Indies. Apart from Bangladesh, one umpire each from Australia, Pakistan, South Africa, Qatar, USA, Zimbabwe, Oman, Ireland and Sri Lanka are participating in the tournament.
This success of Sathira Jessi is a matter of pride for Bangladesh and will be considered a major achievement for women's cricket in the country.
