The 2026 FIFA World Cup mega final, where they lost 1-0 to Spain, has given the possibility of seeing the two champions of Europe and South America clash again. ESPN Argentina has confirmed that the much-awaited 'Finalissima' match between Argentina and Spain could take place in November this year.
The match was originally scheduled to be held in Qatar in March this year, but was postponed due to the geopolitical crisis and war situation. However, FIFA and the Qatari government are very keen to organize this epic rematch in the next FIFA window in November. The Qatari government has reserved the hosting and broadcasting rights for this match.
Schedule complexity and team status
There is a major technical obstacle to organizing the match in the November international window. Spain has two important matches scheduled in the UEFA Nations League against England and the Czech Republic. FIFA is therefore continuing intensive discussions to finalize the date of the Finalissima while managing the busy schedule of the Spanish Football Federation.
Meanwhile, if the match is held in November this year, it could end an era in Argentine football. Along with successful coach Lionel Scaloni, whose contract expires at the end of the year, world-winning superstar Lionel Messi and star goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez have hinted at saying goodbye to international football. As a result, the match could become an emotional farewell stage for them.
