A Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) leader was shot in Gazipur. The incident took place at around 12 noon on Thursday (January 8) in the Mogarkhal area of Ward No. 17 of Gazipur city. The target of the shooting is said to be Habib Chowdhury, a member of the Gazipur Metropolitan Committee of NCP. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit him and he escaped unhurt.
The victim, Habib Chowdhury, is a resident of Brahmin Bauga village in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj district. He is the son of Phatik Chan and Ruksana. He currently lives in the Mogarkhal (71 Gali) area of Basan police station in Gazipur city. Locals said that he was regularly involved in political activities.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Basan Police Station Harun Or Rashid said that Habib Chowdhury had advertised online for the sale of a used motorcycle. Based on the advertisement, two people contacted him and came to the Mogarkhal area on Thursday morning. They examined the motorcycle in various ways for about an hour. At one stage, one of them approached Habib Chowdhury, pulled out a firearm and fired one round before quickly fleeing with the motorcycle.
The OC also said that when Habib Chowdhury ran after them while snatching the motorcycle, another round of shots was fired at him. However, the second bullet also missed him. Panic spread in the area immediately after the incident.
Describing the incident, Habib Chowdhury said, “They met me saying they wanted to buy a motorcycle. One of them got on the motorcycle saying they wanted to test it. Just then, the other suddenly opened fire at me. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit. After that, they fled with the motorcycle. I am preparing to take legal action in this incident.”
In response to the incident, Ali Naser Khan, the northern joint chief coordinator of the Jatiya Nagorik Party, called it a ‘planned attack’. He said, “July fighter Habib Chowdhury was shot in a planned manner by setting a trap. If he was shot, he would have been a martyr like Shahid Hadi. The way Shahid Hadi was shot, Habib Chowdhury was also targeted in the same way.” He strongly condemned the incident and demanded that those involved be arrested within 12 hours and those who gave the instructions brought to justice and given exemplary punishment.
In this regard, Basan Police Station OC Harunur Rashid said that the police are taking the incident seriously. If a written complaint is received from the victim, necessary legal action will be taken. At the same time, a police operation is underway to identify and arrest those involved in the incident.
