Among the government colleges in Bangladesh, 68 colleges named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members have been renamed. From now on, these colleges will be known according to the names of the local areas. The Ministry of Education announced this decision through a notification on Wednesday (May 28).
The notification said that this change has been made in light of the instructions of the Cabinet Decision Implementation Monitoring Branch under the Cabinet Division. Such a decision has been taken mainly to reflect the opinions, traditions and culture of the local people.
Earlier, the interim government had removed the names of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members from the names of some educational institutions. This time, a similar initiative has been taken on a larger scale.
Not only colleges, the names of 13 more government universities named after the Sheikh family have also been changed this time. Of these, 10 were named after Bangabandhu, 1 after Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, 1 after Sheikh Hasina, and 1 after Mujibnagar. The new names of these universities have also been given according to the names of the relevant areas.
Many say that this change is an attempt to maintain political neutrality in the country's education system. This will make the identity of the educational institutions more relevant to the people. However, there is also room for criticism. Some say that before changing the name, attention should have been paid to important issues such as the quality of education, infrastructure development, and recruitment of adequate teachers.
Still, many believe that this change can be a positive step for the future. Because this will make the educational institutions more deeply involved with the local society, and the educational environment can be more liberal and participatory, apart from political views.
