Possible successors for three important positions in BNP and government

As expected, BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been nominated for the presidency. After receiving the nomination for the presidency, he resigned from all party positions, including the party's Secretary General, Standing Committee member and primary member. At the same time, Mirza Fakhrul has also resigned from the cabinet.

With the BNP's absolute majority in the National Assembly, it is now very clear that Mirza Fakhrul is going to become the 23rd President of the country. If he is elected President, three important positions in the party and the government will be vacant. In addition, his Thakurgaon-1 seat in the parliament may also be declared vacant. A by-election will be held in that seat later.

Now, the most discussed issue is who will be the successor to the important organizational position of the Secretary General of BNP.

Three in discussion for Secretary General post

If Mirza Fakhrul becomes President, the names of three leaders within the party have been discussed as his possible successors. They are BNP Standing Committee member and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Standing Committee member and Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and the party's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Citing party internal sources, it has been learned that BNP may initially appoint an acting Secretary General before or around the National Council. A final decision on this matter may be taken later during or around the National Council.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi is more likely

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi did not participate in the election this time and was not included in the cabinet. As a result, many responsible party leaders believe that if the post of Secretary General becomes vacant, he is more likely to be made the acting Secretary General.

There is also such a precedent in BNP. Mirza Fakhrul himself was once the senior joint secretary general of the party. Later, he was made the acting secretary general. In the next national council, he was relieved of his duties and given the responsibility of the full secretary general.

Salahuddin and Amir Khasru in discussion

The names of Salahuddin Ahmed and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury are also in discussion for the post of secretary general. Both are important members of the BNP standing committee and are currently in charge of important ministries in the government.

Salahuddin Ahmed is serving as the home minister. On the other hand, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury is in charge of the finance ministry. There is a discussion within the party about whether any of them will be directly appointed as secretary general because they handle important responsibilities in the government as well as the party.

Who will come to the local government ministry?

If Mirza Fakhrul is elected president, his ministry responsibilities will also have to be redistributed. However, a final decision has not yet been made on whether someone new will be given responsibility in the local government, rural development and cooperative ministries, or whether a current cabinet member will be given additional responsibility.

As a result, discussions are increasing in the political arena about who will take charge of the BNP Secretary General and important ministries of the government in addition to the presidential election.

Mirza Fakhrul's victory in the presidential election is largely certain

According to the constitution, the president is elected by the votes of members of parliament. Currently, the BNP has a more than two-thirds majority in the National Assembly. On the other hand, the number of members of the opposition parties, including Jamaat, is 90, including reserved women's seats.

For this reason, the victory of the BNP-supported candidate in the presidential election is considered to be largely certain. In that case, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir may be elected the 23rd President of the country.

Earlier, on July 24, Md. Shahabuddin, who was elected on the nomination of the Awami League, which was ousted from power in the student-public uprising, resigned from the post of president. Currently, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is serving as the acting President.

According to the constitution, a new President must be elected within 90 days of the office of the President becoming vacant. As a result, in addition to completing the presidential election within the stipulated time, new leadership must also be appointed to the important positions that will become vacant in the BNP and the government.
