Strict action will be taken if narrative is created against the state, not the government: State Minister for Information

Everyone has the right to criticize the government. However, strict action will be taken if a narrative is created against the state, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury has warned.

He made these remarks at a discussion meeting organized at the Mymensingh District Commissioner's office on Thursday (August 13) night on what to do in the context of the spread of misleading information and propaganda on social media.

The State Minister said that the government can be criticized and everyone has the right to speak against the government. No action will be taken even if a narrative is created against the government. However, if a narrative is created against the state, it will be strictly suppressed.

He said that the government is working on amending the Cyber ​​Security Act. A high-level committee has also been formed for this. Discussions are underway on how to make the law more effective and strong by giving utmost importance to the interests of the people and the state.

Yaser Khan Chowdhury said that special importance will be given to the cyber security of women and children in the new cyber security law. Many people are mentally disturbed due to cyber bullying, defamatory propaganda and propaganda against women on social media. Necessary provisions will be added to the law taking these issues into consideration.

He also said that extensive public consultation will be taken after discussing with people from different classes and professions before enacting the law. At the same time, necessary measures will be taken to prevent misuse of the law.

The State Minister also emphasized on increasing awareness and moral education to prevent misuse of social media. He said that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken the initiative to create various educational videos and reels in coordination with the Ministry of Education.

He also said that these awareness-raising contents will be disseminated at various levels including schools and colleges, as well as reaching the general public through information offices and journalists.
