India Launches Its First Hydrogen-Powered Train

Published: 03:41 17 July 2026
India has officially launched its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a major milestone in the country's transition toward clean and sustainable railway transportation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the eco-friendly train, which will operate on the 89-kilometer Jind–Sonipat route in the northern state of Haryana.
According to Indian Railways, the train was developed using indigenous technology and manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. It entered passenger service after successfully completing trial runs and receiving all necessary safety approvals.
One of the World's Most Powerful Hydrogen Broad-Gauge Trains
Indian Railways describes the train as one of the world's most powerful hydrogen-powered broad-gauge trains. It consists of two hydrogen-powered driving cars and eight passenger coaches. Each power car generates approximately 1,200 kW of power, enabling the train to reach a maximum speed of 110 km/h.
How Does the Hydrogen Train Work?
The train uses hydrogen fuel cell technology to generate electricity. Its propulsion system combines hydrogen fuel cells, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries, and onboard hydrogen storage cylinders.
Unlike conventional diesel trains, the hydrogen-powered system produces water vapor as its primary emission, significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving environmental sustainability.
Dedicated Hydrogen Refueling Facility
A dedicated hydrogen storage and refueling station has been established in Jind, Haryana, specifically for this project. The facility safely stores compressed hydrogen and allows rapid refueling using advanced dispensing technology, reducing turnaround time for train operations.
Advanced Safety Features
Because hydrogen is highly flammable, the train is equipped with multiple safety systems. These include hydrogen leak detectors, temperature sensors, smoke and fire detection systems, continuous ventilation, and an automatic emergency shutdown mechanism. These technologies are designed to ensure safe operation under all conditions.
A Step Toward Green Transportation
The launch of India's first hydrogen-powered train represents a significant step in the country's green transportation strategy. Experts believe hydrogen-powered rail technology can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and support long-term sustainable mobility.
If the pilot project proves successful, Indian Railways plans to expand hydrogen-powered train services to additional routes across the country in the coming years.
