Russia has attacked a major government building in the Ukrainian capital Kiev for the first time. Several parts of the building were damaged in the attack that took place overnight on Sunday (September 7). Witnesses said smoke could be seen billowing from the building after the explosion. BBC News.
Russia also attacked the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kryvyi Rih. At least three infrastructure facilities were damaged.
The report said that Russia carried out this attack to warn against Western countries' efforts to send peacekeeping troops. According to analysts, the attack on government buildings in Kiev marks a new turn in the war, because the capital's main administrative buildings have never been targeted before.
The city center is usually protected by air defense systems. Therefore, direct strikes by Russian missiles and drones are extremely rare.
Meanwhile, other residential buildings in Kiev were also attacked. Several high-rise buildings were partially destroyed and there were casualties, local authorities confirmed.
According to analysts, the attack carries symbolic meaning. It makes it clear that President Vladimir Putin is not prepared to walk the path of peace; rather, Russia is taking a more aggressive offensive strategy.
