Opposition leader proposes to change fiscal year to January-December

The opposition leader and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has proposed to change the current July-June-based fiscal year to the January-December calendar year in the National Parliament.
He raised this proposal while participating in the budget session of the 13th National Parliament on Monday (June 29). According to him, due to the structure of the current fiscal year, unnecessary pressure and risk of wastage are created when work is completed quickly at the end of the year amid floods and natural disasters.
He said that the progress of work in the last 10 months of the fiscal year is comparatively less, and rushing to complete work at the end creates opportunities for corruption and irregularities. Therefore, this structure needs to be changed.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also said that although the budget is formulated in the parliament, its implementation mainly depends on the executive branch. Therefore, it is necessary to increase accountability at the administrative level to ensure proper use of public money.
He urged the government to seriously consider the issue and take effective initiatives to change the duration of the fiscal year.
