The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and several Arab nations have strongly condemned a drone attack on a power station in the holy city of Medina, Saudi Arabia. The United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain have issued separate statements condemning the incident and expressing their support for Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi-led coalition claims that Yemen's Houthi group carried out the attack. However, the Houthis have denied the allegation, dismissing it as a "false claim."
The Attack on the Medina Power Station
Saudi authorities reported that the drone attack targeted the Taiba power distribution station in Medina. This station supplies electricity to the Prophet's Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi).
Although a transformer was damaged in the attack, officials stated that the power supply system was not completely disrupted.
Major General Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, stated that evidence of Houthi involvement was found through investigations, operational data, and an examination of the wreckage of the drone used in the attack.
However, a military official from the group rejected the allegation in a statement published by the Houthi-controlled news agency, Saba. He claimed that Saudi Arabia raised this new accusation because it had failed to provide evidence for previous claims.
OIC Condemnation and Reactions from Arab Nations
In a statement, the OIC described the attack on critical infrastructure in Medina as an act that escalates tensions. The organization noted that such attacks violate the principles of international and humanitarian law.
The OIC also expressed solidarity with the measures taken to ensure Saudi Arabia's security and stability, as well as the protection of its holy sites.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the attack on Medina poses a threat to Saudi Arabia's sovereignty and security, reaffirming the country's full support for the Kingdom.
Jordan also condemned the attack, describing it as a threat to Saudi Arabia's security and territorial integrity. The spokesperson for the country's Foreign Ministry expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
Kuwait stated that the attack on the facility supplying electricity to the Prophet's Mosque constitutes an attack on civilian infrastructure. The country described the incident as a violation of international and humanitarian law.
Meanwhile, Bahrain condemned the Houthi group's continued attacks on Saudi Arabia. It expressed support for measures taken to ensure Saudi Arabia's security and called upon the UN Security Council to take necessary action.
Previous reports of drone attacks targeting Mecca
Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition reported that on September 15, Saudi air defense systems detected and destroyed a drone approaching the area south of Mecca.
The Saudi coalition claimed that the drone was shot down before it could enter the restricted airspace over Mecca.
