Jamaat Amir calls for calm following clashes in Mirpur

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami and the local Member of Parliament, has expressed deep concern over the clashes between small traders and the police/City Corporation during an eviction drive on the sidewalks of Mirpur in the capital. Urging everyone to remain calm and help bring the situation under control, he stated that the approach to resolving the issue must be impartial and humane.

He made this appeal in a post on his verified Facebook page around 2:30 PM on Wednesday. The Jamaat Amir noted that the eviction drive took place around 10:30 AM on Wednesday on the sidewalk adjacent to Hope Market, spanning the area from Mirpur-13 to Mirpur-10. During the incident, City Corporation equipment was damaged, officials and employees were assaulted, and clashes erupted between the police and ordinary traders. Even journalists faced obstruction while attempting to cover the event.

Expressing surprise at the local administration's actions in his capacity as the elected MP, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman remarked that consulting the local MP before taking measures affecting public interests would have allowed for more coordinated implementation. He emphasized the need to avoid conflict and adopt measures that neither harm small traders nor obstruct the movement of the general public.

He strongly condemned the irregularities and extortion associated with the operation. According to him, a dishonest extortionist ring has long been collecting daily, weekly, monthly, and annual fees from these traders in exchange for allowing them to set up shop—a financial burden that ultimately falls on ordinary consumers.

Criticizing the abrupt eviction drive conducted without alternative arrangements, the opposition leader questioned whether any provisions had been made for the displaced sidewalk traders. He stressed the importance of involving all relevant parties, including the local MP, in any future actions. Finally, Dr. Urging everyone to remain calm, Shafiqur Rahman stated that there is no place for the accomplices of fascism and that any problem must be resolved in an impartial, realistic, and humane manner.
