One of the six twins born at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) has died. The newborn boy died while undergoing treatment at the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) on Sunday (September 14) evening.
Earlier on the same day, at around 9 am, Mokseda Akhter Priya (23), wife of Md. Hanif, a Qatari expatriate from Khajuria village in Senbag upazila of Noakhali, gave birth to six children at the labor ward of the gynecology department of DMCH Hospital. Three of the children were kept in the DMCH NICU and the remaining three in the NICU of a private hospital. Priya's sister-in-law Farzana Akhter confirmed that one of the newborn boys at DMCH died in the evening.
Farzana Akhter said that Priya was 27 weeks pregnant. During her pregnancy, she was under the care of local doctors and an ultrasound initially revealed that Priya was carrying five children. But after being admitted to the hospital, it was revealed that she was going to be the mother of six children.
On September 9, Priya went to her elder sister's house in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. Later, she sought treatment at Monowara Hospital. When labor pains began on Saturday night, she was quickly admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital and gave birth to six children naturally on Sunday morning.
Dr. Nilufar Yasmin, Medical Officer of the Neonatal Department of Dhaka Medical College, said that the babies were born prematurely. Their weight ranged from 615 grams to 900 grams. She said, "The pregnancy was 27 weeks. The babies, who were born naturally, were very weak. The medical team is closely monitoring them."
The incident has brought joy and sorrow to the family. The hospital authorities have said that all possible medical care is being provided to keep the five newborns alive.
