Bangladesh has called for strong and effective steps for nuclear disarmament at the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) held at the United Nations Headquarters. Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, addressed the general debate of the conference. He said that the spread of nuclear weapons worldwide poses a major threat to international peace and security and hinders the path to sustainable development.
Reiterating Bangladesh's position, the Ambassador noted that the country has long been working for the disarmament of both nuclear and conventional weapons. Despite being located in a nuclear-weapon region, Bangladesh has voluntarily maintained its commitment as a non-nuclear state. He called on nuclear-weapon states to fulfill their legal obligations under Article 6 of the NPT.
The speech also said that constructive dialogue, mutual trust-building and coordinated global efforts are essential to build a safe world free from nuclear threats. To this end, Bangladesh is committed to working together with the international community to ensure a peaceful and stable world for future generations.
