US President Donald Trump has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to consider the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops deployed in Syria and Lebanon. According to international media, the issue came up in a recent telephone conversation between the two leaders.
According to the report, Trump believes that the presence of Israeli troops in Syria could further increase regional tensions. At the same time, he also mentioned the need to reduce the military presence on the Lebanese border.
On the other hand, Netanyahu said in the discussion that it is important for them to maintain security in the border areas to ensure Israel's border security. According to him, the issue of deploying troops is being decided considering the security situation.
According to analysts, the government is unlikely to move quickly on major military policy changes in view of the current political situation in Israel and the upcoming national elections. As a result, it may be difficult to decide on an immediate withdrawal of troops from Syria or Lebanon.
Meanwhile, a meeting was recently held between Israeli and Lebanese representatives in Rome, Italy, under the mediation of the United States. The border situation, security arrangements, and progress in implementing a previously reached framework agreement were discussed.
It is reported that as part of the agreement, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from certain areas of southern Lebanon and the deployment of Lebanese regular forces there are under discussion. However, this process has not yet been fully implemented.
Israeli officials say that the next step will be taken only after it is confirmed whether the security risks in the relevant areas have been completely eliminated. On the other hand, the Lebanese side has asked for a quick withdrawal of troops as well as a specific timetable for this.
Although the White House has not officially commented on the issue in detail, a US official, citing the close relationship between the two countries, said that Washington continues to strive to establish stability and peace in the Middle East.
