Clashes Erupt Over Plan to Demolish Part of Shahi Mosque in Ujjain

Clashes broke out between police and people protesting against a plan to demolish a section of the Shahi Mosque in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. According to an NDTV report, police used tear gas and resorted to a lathi-charge to bring the situation under control on Monday (September 28).

Municipal authorities have initiated a road-widening project in Ujjain ahead of the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The plan involves the removal of 272 structures, including the prayer hall, a minaret, and adjoining sections of the Shahi Mosque.

Protesters gathered at the site to oppose the demolition. Reports indicated that bricks and stones were hurled at the police during the confrontation. Subsequently, the Rapid Action Force was deployed to the area.
Earlier, the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court had dismissed two petitions challenging the Ujjain Municipal Corporation's move; however, the dispute regarding the demolition of the mosque's section persists.
Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi has opposed the decision to demolish the mosque's section, suggesting that the alternative of acquiring land on the opposite side of the road should be considered. Meanwhile, municipal authorities maintain that widening the road is essential to accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims expected for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
